What is your name and position at Saving Mothers?

Jessica Oliveira, Guatemala Program Director, Founder of the School of POWHER.

Why did you join Saving Mothers?

At the time, I had gone on a few global health surgical trips which exposed me to travel, culture, and the disparities women in developing worlds live with. Then I met Dr. Shirazian and Saving Mothers and was inspired and empowered to do something. I am a 1st generation American and privileged to be a woman with an education and opportunities most people around the world can only dream of. It was then I decided to give back and share the abundance.

How long have you been working for Saving Mothers?
8 beautiful and fulfilling years.

What has been the most life-changing experience for you in working for Saving Mothers?
At the end of our first class in 2014 I decided to share my personal story with our students, and it was one very foreign to the women. My life experiences challenged their beliefs and I was afraid of the judgement that would come with exposing myself. Unexpectedly, after I told my story, one by one, they came to me and hugged me. We shared tears and I quickly learned the power of story telling and sisterhood. These women who not only lived miles away from me in a completely different world now saw me as their equal. That’s when I knew I was on the right path.

How have you changed since first working for Saving Mothers?
I have learned so much about patience, compassion and unconditional love. I have learned to embrace the many powers of being a woman. Growing up in a Portuguese Brazilian family I was exposed to very specific gender roles. I used to think that being a strong independent women meant I had to fight everything traditional I was taught. The women I work value their traditions and taught me that we are dynamic and not defined by the boxes our culture may put us in. I am so very thankful of that.

What do you do in your free time?
I love to spend my time on the beach with a good book.

Fun fact about yourself:
I am queen of the typos. Always find myself battling my auto correct.

¿Por qué te uniste a Saving Mothers?
En ese momento, había participado en unos pocos viajes de cirugía de salud global que me expusieron a los viajes, la cultura y las disparidades que viven las mujeres en los países en desarrollo. Luego conocí la Dra. Shirazian y Salvando Madres y me inspiré para hacer algo. Soy una Americana de 1ra generación y privilegiada para ser una mujer con una educación y las oportunidades que la mayoría de la gente alrededor del mundo solo puede soñar a tener. Fue entonces que decidí compartir la abundancia que he tenido.

¿Cuánto tiempo llevas trabajando para Saving Mothers?
8 años hermosos.

¿Cuál ha sido la experiencia más cambiante para usted en trabajar para Saving Mothers?
Al final de nuestra primera clase en 2014 decidí compartir mi historia personal con nuestras estudiantes, y es una historia muy ajena a ellas. Mis experiencias de la vida desafiaron sus creencias y tenía miedo del juicio que vendría con exponerme. Inesperadamente, después de contar mi historia, uno por uno, vinieron a mí y me abrazaron. Compartimos lágrimas y rápidamente aprendí el poder de la hermandad y del la narración personal. Estas mujeres que no sólo vivían a kilómetros de distancia de mí en un mundo completamente diferente ahora me veían igual. Fue entonces cuando supe que estaba en el camino correcto.

¿Cómo has cambiado desde que trabajaste por Saving Mothers?
He aprendido mucho acerca de la paciencia, la compasión y el amor incondicional. He aprendido a abrazar los muchos poderes de ser una mujer. Creciendo en una familia Brasilera-portuguesa fui expuesto a papeles muy específicos del género. Solía pensar que ser una mujer fuerte independiente significaba que tenía que luchar contra todo lo tradicional que me enseñaron. Las mujeres en que trabajo valoran sus tradiciones y me enseñan que somos dinámicos y no definidos por las cajas en que nuestra cultura nos ponen. Estoy muy agradecido por eso.

¿Qué haces en tu tiempo libre?
Me encanta pasar mi tiempo en la playa con un buen libro.

Soy la reina de los errores tipográficos. Siempre me encuentro luchando contra mi auto correcto.
