Volunteers in Action
Our three volunteers, all 4th year medical students, have been in Guatemala for the past three weeks and have been enjoying their busy (but exciting) schedule. They are supporting the local clinics where they get the opportunity to work with the comadronas (traditional Mayan birth attendants) as they learn the skills necessary to ensure safe deliveries, address complications, and refer for hospital delivery when appropriate.
They have the opportunity to see firsthand the importance of our comadronas providing prenatal care in the community. They have also seen a home birth with our senior comadrona, Juana, and assisted in a couple of births in the clinics. In the next two weeks our volunteers will be leaving the clinic to observe our most recent comodrona graduates on their home visits in San Martin.
